Botox VS. Dermal Fillers – What Is The Difference?

You’ve heard a lot about Botox and Fillers but you may be still be asking yourself what the difference is between the two. In this blog we give you a quick breakdown on Botox vs. Fillers.

What Is Botox?

Botox is the first of its kind neurotoxin that was FDA approved in 2002 for cosmetic use to soften frown lines in between the eyebrows. Botox as a neurotoxin is a chemical substance that when injected into a muscle prevents it from contracting. Therefore, it reduces dynamic lines and over time corrects static lines.

Dynamic lines are those that are created when we make facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, laughing, or scrunching our nose. Static lines are the lines we see when the face is at rest. When used on a regular basis Botox will prevent lines and wrinkles from being etched into the face and correct those that already there by softening them over time.

What Are Fillers?

Unlike Botox , dermal fillers are jelly like substances injected into the skin and used to replace lost volume. They can enhance facial features and correct deep lines and wrinkles. For instance they are used in areas of the face such as:

  • Lips
  • Smile lines called nasal labial folds
  • Marionette lines or to fix the “jowl area”
  • Under the eyes
  • In the cheeks
  • Vertical lines on the upper and lower lips aka “smokers lines”

Some common brand names of dermal fillers are Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse. There are similarities and differences to all these brand names. Each brand name has a line or family of fillers.

For instance Juvederm is a brand name filler that is made into five different types Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Volure, Juvederm Volbella, and Juvederm Voluma. Each type is slightly different so that it may be best used Filler Blog(2) in different areas of the face to achieve desired result.

Injectable Filler

As an example, Juvederm Volbella contains the thinnest, most spreadable gel—perfect to fill fine lip lines or even smooth the delicate area under the eyes. Where as Juvederm Voluma contains the thickest, strongest gel—ideal for deep injection into the cheek area to get a nice lift and volume boost.
